Let's peel back these layers!

juliannlaw Here is a closeup of the endpapers in my debut picture book, THE WORKD’S LONGEST SOCK. I work digitally in Adobe Photoshop but the program doesn’t do it all for me! I knit all the pixels by hand! Haha! I do have things I do to help me work quickly and efficiently, though, like using layers. Here you get to see me take off those layers one by one till we are back at nothing but a background. The World's Longest Sock is now available on  Amazon ,  Barnes and Noble ,  Target , or wherever you  buy books !

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Yesterday was my mom's birthday. She was born on 07-07-47 at 7:07 am and weighted 7 lbs 6 oz. Needless to say, seven has always been her favorite and lucky number. There were seven of us in my family and her favorite movie was Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. July 7th was also her father's birthday. . .

Last year on 07-07-07 she turned sixty and all five of us kids collaborated on a special birthday gift for her, a memory quilt with 60 squares, 12 from each kid. We all picked a border fabric we liked and then each took one of the colors within that fabric to base our squares on. Jenn had the light blue, I had yellows and golds, Shannon used greens, Missy pinks and then my brother Jon was the dark blue (by the way, Jon is far away in the land of Guam and was excused from sewing his own squares for lack of sewing machine and tools. But you should know, had he the proper resources I believe he could've completed his 12 squares with only minor coaching. He has actually sewn some unforgettable Christmas gifts in the past . . . have you ever seen the Seinfeld where George streaks at a Yankees game in a flesh colored body suit? Well, he actually made flesh colored body suits for the two biggest Seinfeld fans in the family, Miss and her hubby Jer. Hilarious.)

Each square is significant in its meaning or has a memory attached with it or something that is special about mom and the family she created. For instance the one with seven hearts is for the fact that her seventh grandbaby was born in the year she turned 60, and the green checkerboard symbolizes that she's always loved to play games, the dark blue square is a block known as The Friendship Star and shows mom's unconditional love and support, the pink one next to it symbolizes our eternal family.

It was a fun project to all work on together. . .

what a beautiful gift. i am sure your mom cherishes that so much! i do, and it is not even for me! what a beautiful expression of love, and a tribute to show what she has taught each of you.
Since you believe your bro. would only need minor coaching, where does that put me on the spectrum of coach sewing? JK.

What a beautiful and unique gift. I need to raid your brain for gift ideas.

THis is one of the coolest things ever! I bet she treasures this quilt so much...so cool! And PS--if your brother really can sew, I'm pretty darn impressed!

Cool post! I can't wait to see THE quilt! And about the flesh colored body suits... I think Jon should start his own business. They are very comfortable to wear and they wash up very nicely. :)
